The Diploma program CAS begins at the end of the Sophomore year, once the students become Juniors . IB requires 150 hours , distributed between creative , action , and service activities. THS adds another 25 hours that may be earned any time over the 4 years. These hours include cultural activities. Students return their CAS book, which is documentation of their activities, and a 500-word self-evaluation/reflection paper to the CAS coordinator. If the paper is superficial, students will be asked to reflect further. The logs are checked, but basically accepted as is. There is no grade for CAS, but it must be completed to receive the diploma. The reflection paper is being reevaluated and may be changed for the next school year.
These activities cannot result in a grade or compensation and cannot be used as recognition in any other program, such as Scouts or 4H. Students select their own projects, which tend to make them more relevant, and IB directs us to interpret the areas broadly to include as many possible activities as possible. |
